FreeCell Strategy


FreeCell is the one solitaire where strategy is everything. Every card is face up, roughly 99% of deals are solvable, and there is no stock to blame — which means nearly every loss traces back to a decision. That is either daunting or liberating, and good FreeCell players decide it is liberating. Plan the line before you touch a card

The deepest difference between FreeCell and Klondike is that FreeCell rewards thinking before the first move, not during the game. With every card visible, the opening position is a puzzle you can read in full — so read it. Before moving anything, locate the four Aces and count what sits on top of each. Find the 2s and 3s. Identify which cascade could be emptied most cheaply. Notice any card already lying on the card it will eventually need — a red 6 resting on a black 7 is work already done.

Then sketch an actual sequence: "unload the 5♦ to the cell, drop the K♣ into the gap later, get the A♥ out by move six." The plan will bend as you go, but players who open with a plan lose a fraction of the games lost by players who open by moving the first convenient card. In FreeCell, the first careless move is very often the losing one — it just takes twenty more moves to find out.

Free cells are debt, not storage

The beginner's instinct is to treat the four free cells as a shelf: inconvenient card, park it. The expert's instinct is the opposite — every card placed in a cell is a loan that must be repaid, with interest. An occupied cell reduces your supermove capacity immediately, and a card with no planned exit can sit in its cell for the rest of the game, quietly strangling your mobility.

Before parking any card, name the move that brings it back down: which black 8 will receive that red 7, and when? If you cannot name it, you are not storing the card — you are burying it in plain sight. As a working discipline, keep at least two cells empty through the midgame, and regard a third occupied cell as an alarm. Games are lost the move the last cell fills, not the move the loss becomes visible.

Empty cascades beat free cells

The supermove arithmetic makes the hierarchy explicit: each empty cell adds one to your moving capacity, while each empty cascade doubles it. With four empty cells you can move five cards; with two empty cells and two empty cascades, twelve. But the doubling is only half the story — an empty cascade also holds an entire sequence rather than a single card, and it can be built upon in alternating colors, becoming a productive column rather than a parking space.

So work toward emptying a cascade early, and prefer the short ones — the four six-card cascades on the right are one card cheaper to clear than the seven-card cascades on the left. Once you have a gap, spend it deliberately: a gap consumed by a junk card is a free cell with extra steps, while a gap holding a well-chosen sequence, or kept open to power a supermove, is the strongest asset on the table.

Dig for buried Aces first

Nothing else works until the Aces flow. A deal where two Aces sit at the bottoms of the two deepest cascades is a hard deal no matter how tidy the rest looks, and the early game should be organized around excavating the worst-buried Ace — while it is trapped, every card of its suit is effectively frozen out of the foundations. As you dig, keep an eye on color balance: if both black 5s end up buried, the red 4s will eventually have no tableau home, and sequences will jam. Alternating-color parity is easy to ignore for ten moves and expensive to ignore for twenty; when you choose which of two equal cards to uncover or keep available, favor the color the visible sequences are short of.

Foundations: when to send, when to hold

FreeCell tempts you to bank every possible card, and — as in Klondike — restraint pays. Aces and 2s go up immediately, always. Beyond that, a card still has a tableau job: a black 5 on the foundation cannot catch a red 4 that needs a home. The standard safety rule: a card is safe to send up when both foundations of the opposite color have reached at least one rank below it — a black 5 is safe once both red foundations show at least a 4, because no red 4 can still need it. Below that threshold, hold the card unless it is actively blocking your dig.

Endgame safety and auto-play

That same threshold is exactly what your game's auto-play computes: it sends a card to the foundations automatically only when no remaining tableau card could ever need it, which is why auto-play never loses a game — it is a convenience, not a gamble. In the endgame proper, the position usually tips all at once: when the surviving sequences are clean and your cells are clear, the whole table drains in a cascade of automatic moves. Getting there is a matter of not spending your last resources early — which is the whole guide in one sentence. If a deal does defeat you, remember that almost every layout has a solution; with undo, walk the line backward to the move that spent your last cell or gap, and play the branch you rejected.

Should I move cards to the foundations as soon as I can?

Aces and 2s, yes — always. Is an empty cascade really better than a free cell?

Yes, substantially. A free cell holds one card, full stop. An empty cascade can hold an entire sequence, can be built on in alternating colors, and doubles your supermove capacity, where a free cell only adds one. When you have a choice of which to consume, spend the cell and protect the cascade.

How do good players start a FreeCell game?

By not moving anything. Strong players read the whole layout first: where the four Aces are, what is burying them, and which cascade can be emptied cheapest. The first moves then follow a plan — usually freeing an Ace or two and uncovering low cards — rather than reacting to whatever looks movable.

What win rate is realistic in FreeCell?
